Employee Spotlight - Todd Spencer

22nd September 2022

Employee Spotlight - Todd Spencer

In continuing our Employee Spotlight, we have Internal Sales Advisor, Todd Spencer.

A Sunday roast specialist with a passion to succeed in sales, read all about Todd below.

1. How long have you been working at Oadby Plastics/Conveyors?

TS - "I started in May 2021, so 1 year and 4 months"

2. What inspired you to pursue the career you have today?

TS - "I’ve been doing sales since I was 17, I left school with not the best grades, and I had no real guidance on what I should do after leaving school. I needed a job to help my Mum with bills etc so got a job at HSBC in a call centre. I enjoyed sales and was pretty good at it so I continued, eventually becoming a manager of my own team for several years at Europcar before being made redundant due to covid hitting the travel industry hard. I see it as a blessing in disguise as I really enjoy my job at Oadby Plastics, there’s a lot less stress compared to car rental"

3. What does your job entail?

TS - "As part of the Conveyor Team, my job is to promote and sell our Movex range to both new and existing customers, use my knowledge to give guidance on suitable solutions and ensure that a top level of service is always given to both internal and external customers"

4. What’s been your proudest accomplishment since working at Oadby Plastics?

TS - "It’s more of a personal achievement than anything but being made redundant from my job at Europcar really impacted me mentally, it almost destroyed my confidence and self-belief in my working ability. Coming to work here has helped me realise I am good at what I do and helped me enjoy work again"

5. What’s the most exciting thing you are working on right now?

TS - "We are hoping to start a project to make our own working conveyor, which in turn will help to improve our technical knowledge and give us a hands-on experience on the design and engineering aspect of conveyors, which is very different to what we usually do on a day-to-day basis"

6. What was your first job?

TS - "I worked as a machine operator at an optical factory, manufacturing pairs of glasses. It was mind-numbingly boring!"

7. What one skill do you think everyone should learn?

TS - "Everyone should learn how to cook. I only started cooking for myself a few years ago, and I absolutely love it. I find it very therapeutic, and it makes me happy serving food to people and them enjoying it (I make the best Sunday Roast you’ll ever have). I’ve recently started baking, and my chocolate chip cookies are very tasty. I’ll will be making some for the next bake sale"

8. Recommend a TV show and/or book you have recently watched/read

TS - "11.22.63 by Stephen King is the best book I’ve ever read; it’s about going back in time to stop JFK being assassinated but the detail and amount of research Mr King did to capture the time period is incredible. If you don’t like reading, there is also a series starring James Franco, but the book is so much better"

9. What do you do for fun outside of work?

TS - "I’ve recently got into bouldering (indoor climbing) which is challenging and great exercise. I’m also a fan of pub quizzes and love a bit of karaoke as well"

10. Tell us one interesting thing about yourself that people maybe unaware of

TS - "I am a secret geek! I love playing videos games, own hundreds of comic books and have collected action figures for years but have now put a stop to that as it’s a costly hobby and I’m now expecting my 1st child (who I hope will inherit my collection)"

We would like to thank Todd for taking the time to participate.
